Under the Sea with Sculpey

sculpey 4

Hello friends! You are in for a real treat today! I am excited to announce that I was able to get my hands dirty and get in touch with my kid self and create a super fun project to share with you today!  I played with Sculpey! Yes, you heard me right! I said Sculpey! You know, the clay that you mold, sculpt and then bake? That type of clay!

When I received my box of goodies I must say that I was excited! (Ok, Ok both Midge and I were beyond excited to receive our Sculpey product).  You may have watched our Mingle when we shared with you some fabulous projects using the Polyform Air Dry Clay! If you missed it be sure to check it out HERE! Anywho…. we also received in that package some Bake Shop products.  Like I said thrilled! Then come to find out being on the Laura Kelly Design Team we were sent a couple more blocks of Souffie clay.  I knew immediately a fun project for me to make.

My niece loves mermaids! She even has one of those mermaid tails that you put on when you go swimming.  Her birthday is coming up and I really wanted to make her a “mermaid magnet” for her bedroom to hold her swimming photos onto her magnet board.  Now was my chance.

I will share with you a couple of steps on how I created this fun mermaid!

Mermaid getting started

I started with just a ball of the nude or natural color for the head.  I wanted the mermaid to be laying down, I then created the body and the arms.  I then used the pink (shocker) for the mermaid tail.  I took the knife and carved the scales into the mermaid tail.  I created a super tiny ball for the belly button.  I then used the brown and rolled snake like pieces and created the hair.

I then used the cutters shapes (they are like cookie cutters) and created the shells for her top, and a flower for in her hair.  I then took white and made the eyes and black as the eye color.

Her eyes are a little silly but I love that it gave her personality.  She does have a little bit of a larger head, I noticed when she was all said and done, however I decided to leave it because that also gives her personality.  Next I followed the directions on the packaging on how to bake her.

This is how she turned out! I am in love with my little mermaid! My sweet niece is going to be so excited.  But wait! I had to make her a cute card to go with this cute mermaid! Laura Kelly has this amazing card printable available at her shop HERE! I was thrilled to print it out and add just a few finishing touches.  It goes perfectly with this gift!

I added a cute little mermaid embellishment from the Imaginisce Parrrty Me Hearty line, along with a gold happy birthday coin.  This card melts my heart!
